The energy transition involves a lot of new terms and approaches. We’ve compiled them for you here!

Capacity rate

That’s the new calculation for your use of the electricity grid, also known as the “distribution grid charges” or “net rates.

The capacity tariff has no effect on your energy rate, only on the network rate portion of your total energy bill.

Injection rate

Also known as a feed-in fee. This is the financial compensation you get from your energy supplier for the electricity your solar panels produce, but you can’t immediately consume yourself. You feed that “extra” electricity into the grid, and for this you receive a rate from your energy supplier.

Dynamic rate

The dynamic energy tariff is a structure in which the cost of gas and electricity that varies by day and hour and is based on the purchase prices of energy on the power and gas exchange. The rate for electricity is different every hour and that of gas varies every 24 hours.

C-rate

This is a measure used to describe the charge and discharge rate of a battery or battery storage system. The C-rate is defined as power with which to charge or discharge divided by the nominal capacity of the battery.

BRP

A Balancing Responsible Party refers to an entity responsible for maintaining balance between the production and consumption of electricity within the power grid.

Day-Ahead trading

Refers to electricity trading for the next day, which takes place, for example, on EPEX Spot (European Power Exchange). Market results are published at 12:40 p.m. each day. From 3 p.m., it is already possible to start intraday trading for the next day.

PPA

A Power Purchase Agreement is a power purchase agreement between two parties, being an electricity producer and a customer thereof, such as an electricity consumer or trader. A PPA includes all the terms of this agreement, such as the amount of electricity to be delivered, the negotiated price, who bears what risks, the required accounting and the penalties if the contract is not complied with.

Electricity trade

Depending on the market design, different forms of electricity trading are possible, ranging from short-term anonymous spot markets to long-term Over The Counter markets. This allows electricity to be traded between electricity producers, large industrial consumers and electricity suppliers before the electricity is delivered to final consumers

Balancing market

As in other European countries, transmission system operator Elia watches over the balance in the Belgian grid. She demands that every BRP maintains a balanced portfolio. Specifically, taking into account traded volumes on the electricity markets, the offtake and injection in its portfolio should balance each quarter-hour.

LFP

This battery has lithium iron phosphate as its cathode material. The anode of the battery is usually made of graphite. During battery discharge, the anode releases lithium ions while and the cathode actually picks up lithium ions. During battery charging, these processes are reversed.

Redox Flow

Batteries consist of 2 compartments of electrolyte. Charging and discharging is done by pumping the liquids through a reactor cell containing a membrane through which ions can be exchanged. The greater the volume of compartments and the power of the reactor cell, the greater the storage capacity. She is thus highly scalable
